Wharfedale Girl Guides bridge the gap across the world
2:59pm Monday 11th March 2013 in News
Members of Girlguiding in Wharfedale celebrated Thinking Day in style in The King's Hall, Ilkley, on Saturday.
The occasion, marking the joint birthday of Lord and Lady Baden Powell, gives members the opportunity to think of Brownies and Guides all over the world – ten million in 145 countries.
This year, the local groups looked at the four world centres and did creative activities linked to those countries.
The centres are Our Cabaña in Mexico, Sangam in India, Our Chalet in Switzerland and Pax Lodge in London, England.
Some of the activities included Mexican break-dancing, dressing a wooden spoon in a Swiss national costume, making Indian sand paintings and constructing a ‘London Bridge’ from art straws.
The bridges were tested to destruction by adding potatoes and then weighing the amount it took to collapse the bridge.
The winning bridge took 821 grammes before falling into the “Thames”.
