Otley family butchers' pie is winning combination

At the BPEX Annual Roadshow held at Harrogate Showground, Otley family butchers George Middlemiss & Son were judged champions with their speciality hot- eating pie, pork and asparagus.

Peter Middlemiss said: “I’ve been entering for around 20 years now, so to keep on doing so well against such stiff competition is amazing. Pies have become very popular, which made entering the pie category all the more exciting and our success all the more pleasing.

“The pork and asparagus pie is something completely new and created especially for the event. I was playing around with flavours and wanted a pie with a twist. It has a creamy sauce, but needed something to really enhance the flavour. Pork and asparagus seemed a really nice mix and it worked well.

“Local produce is very important to us. The pork we use is from local farmers and the pie contains Yorkshire asparagus too.”
