Residents and businesses across the Ilkley area are being thanked for helping cancer charity supporters raise a record sum of more than £18,000.

The generosity of people helped the Ilkley Macmillan Cancer Support Committee raise a record of £18,500 in 2012 to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

The 12-strong committee has been hosting events and raising funds for 20 years, but last year was their best fundraising year to date.

The charity’s fundraising manager for York and Yorkshire Dales, Robyn Mountain Wade, said: “The Ilkley committee is a terrific committee who host wonderful events such as their annual fashion show, quiz nights and coffee mornings, not to mention their hard work at supermarket collections.

“However they could not do this alone – it is amazing how the local companies and residents get behind the committee and support all their fundraising efforts; all the money raised will help make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by cancer.

“Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. If you or a loved one has ever been diagnosed, you will know only too well that you need a team of people in your corner supporting you every step of the way.”

The Ilkley committee is well on with organising its fundraising efforts for this year. The committee will kick starting its fundraising for 2013 with a quiz night. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 6, at Ilkley Playhouse, Weston Road, with doors opening at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £10.50, which includes supper, and there will also be a bar and raffle. Organisers are asking for teams of four or six to enter, or just come along. Telephone (01943) 607615 for tickets.
