WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: The group’s January meeting saw a very interesting and informative talk about Microlighting given by M Hutchinson. It included some aerial photography done while the microlight was being flown on a six-day trip from York to Carlisle, Ireland, the Isle of Mull and back. As usual we enjoyed a variety of tasty snacks afterwards with our tea. We also had quite a lively discussion on whether to lobby the Government about saving our high streets or on trying to find ways to understand internet suicides and offer practical help against such decisions. In February we will have a show at Guiseley Theatre, which a group of us always enjoy going to. The next luncheon club, which takes place on the last Wednesday of the month, will be held at JD Wetherspoon’s pub The Bowling Green in Otley. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend our monthly meetings which take place at Cross Green Community Centre on every second Wednesday of the month, at 7.15pm.

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD: The guild promotes the interests of women and raises money for charities. We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Lecture Room, Otley Methodist Church. We also have a wide variety of interest groups including a choir and a gardening group. Our next speaker is on February 2 talking about The Elizabeth Svenson Trust. Visitors welcome. Contact M Lockwood on (01943) 850121 or e-mail mdl65@ talktalk.net for details.

CAMERA CLUB: Bad weather prevented our speaker from attending but for the members who did get through the snow, David Ricketts presented an interesting Proshow selection of images from Gordon North who was a lifetime member of the club. The images, all taken in Yorkshire, were scanned by David from original slides. Mike Holwill also showed his photographs from the Dutch Caribbean Island of Bonaire and there was a short, informative demonstration of Proshow Gold techniques from Barry Beckham. Our club night next week is president’s evening when Jacky Banyard will be showing the entries and winners from this year’s Yorkshire Photographic Union competition. We are always pleased to welcome new members and visitors to our weekly meetings which take place at 7.15pm on Thursdays at the Otley Town Partnership Rooms on Mercury Row.
