Ilkley police issue security warning after thefts

Police are warning Ilkley people to make sure their properties are secure and bicycles are safe following thefts and break-ins last month.

Sergeant Julie Gray, of Wharfedale and Craven Neighbourhood Policing Team, advised residents to make sure their doors are locked – even when at home – and offered crime prevention packs to bike owners.

There were five house burglaries in Ilkley last month, including a sneak-in burglary of an insecure property. Sgt Gray said three people had been arrested in connection with local burglaries.

There were also eight burglaries at other properties in Ilkley. Sgt Gray said garden sheds had been targeted and bicycles stolen.

Police recently gave out crime prevention packs in an initiative at Ilkley cycling shop JD Cycles.

Sgt Gray said more of these packs – including special markers for bike owners to mark their property, plus a saddle cover warning thieves – were available from Ilkley Police Station.

Three thefts from vehicles were also reported in Ilkley in December, as well as three incidents of criminal damage – all damage to vehicles – and three assaults.

Sgt Gray said New Year’s Eve had been busy for the police, but there had been no significant increase in demands for police in the Ilkley area.
