An Otley man who tried to rob his local off-licence brandishing a kitchen knife has been jailed for two and a half years.
Peter Henry, 23, of Kirkgate, had gone to the Rhythm & Booze store – in the same street as his home – at about 8.30pm on September 23, and demanded money.
Henry, who was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court last week after pleading guilty, had produced an eight-inch knife and gestured to the woman behind the counter to open the till.
But the shocked employee instead locked herself in a storeroom at the back of the shop.
Henry, who was unable to open the cash register, fled.
He was later found and arrested nearby.
Judge James Spencer QC sentenced him to 30 months imprisonment for attempted robbery.
