Brother and sister Chloe and Nathan Basson are keeping winning in the family – taking it in turns to carry off prizes in an annual art competition.

This year ten-year-old Chloe was a winner in the charity calendar competition and nine-year-old Nathan was a runner-up – a mirror reflection of last year when Nathan was a winner and Chloe a runner-up.

The brother and sister also picked up prizes in 2009 when Nathan was a winner and Chloe was a runner-up.

The youngsters, who are both pupils at Yeadon Westfield Junior School, keep notching up successes in the competition run by law firm Walker Morris to raise money for Martin House Hospice.

A spokeswoman for the company said all the judging was done anonymously and was entirely down to merit.

The 13 winners, one for each month of the year, plus the front page, were all presented with a hamper full of artists’ materials worth £50, plus a cheque for their school.

The 26 runners-up, including Yeadon Westfield pupils Yasmine Lee, nine, and Annie Palmer, ten, also received a prize each.

The three judges including Yorkshire artist Ashley Jackson, had the tough job of choosing the winning paintings from more than 1,700 entries across 100 schools in the Yorkshire, Humber and North East Lincolnshire regions.

All the proceeds from the sales of the calendar go to Martin House Hospice. Since the competition started 18 years ago it has raised more than £55,000 for the hospice, Walker Morris Partner David Smedley said: “Every year we are astounded by the superb quality of art. It is testament to the tremendous creativity of the children, their teachers and the schools.”
