Olympic triathlete Jonathan Brownlee has helped a newsagent in his attempt to raise £2,000 for Children in Need.

World champion Jonathan, who won a bronze in the London Olympics, was one of those attending a fundraising quiz at the Fox and Hounds in Bramhope.

He and his brother, Olympic gold medallist Alistair, both live in the village.

The quiz, in September, raised £350, and was one of four events organised by newsagent Tariq Qadeer, with the aim of reaching a £2,000 target by November 16.

Now, after the latest event – a four-mile walk which went through the village – Tariq is expecting to have raised a total of around £2,200.

The walk attracted nearly 30 people, including local MP Greg Mulholland and his family.

He said: “It was great to take part with the family in the Bramhope Winter Walk to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

“The summer walk in July was a great success and this was no different with the local community coming out in force to show their support, while enjoying a lovely walk around the village.

“Another huge thank you must go to Tariq for arranging this and for all his continued efforts in organising events across the village, raising money for so many excellent causes. I hope he meets his ambitious fundraising target.”

Tariq said: “Altogether we have now raised £1,980 but there is still some more sponsorship money to come in and I am confident that by Friday the total will be around £2,200. “I would also like to thank La Boutique ladies (Byrel and Pat and their family and friends) who have supported us in every way and raised nearly £500. “Greg and his family joined us in this walk and although it was difficult with three young girls, they were all very brave and managed to complete the walk in good time for such a fantastic cause.”
