THE lone male voice in an Ilkley choir wants more recruits to boost the group's singing strength.

David McLennan, the only man in Moor Notes - and, at 37, also the youngest choir member - has had to sing louder to make up for the shortage of male voices at times.

Now bass singer Mr McLennan and musical director David Robinson are hoping to swell the group's ranks in time for a concert in October, and would particularly like to have more male voices.

Moor Notes formed just over a year ago, and now has 16 members. The group sings a variety of folk, gospel and other styles of music, with the emphasis being on getting together and enjoying singing, with few formal performances.

Mr McLennan says he is one of the few members who can sing bass parts, He said: "I sometimes have to sing louder but everybody mucks in."

He is keen to see more people join, and would like to encourage male singers and younger people to get involved.

Mr Robinson said: "We sing for enjoyment and meet every Monday evening to practice at Ilkley Quakers. The group sounds fantastic but it would benefit from more members, in particular more male voices to balance it out."

Moor Notes will start meeting up again after a summer break on Monday September 8, and is planning to hold a workshop at the Friends Meeting House, Queen's Road, from 10am to noon on September 12.

Anyone interested in joining the group or attending the concert in October should call 01274 770909.
