Five Ilkley events get parish council funding
ANNUAL festivals in Ilkley have been awarded £9,000 by Ilkley Parish Council.
The council has agreed to give out all the cash from its Community Events budget for 2008 to 2009 to five local events.
The largest grant, totalling £6,200, is going to the Ilkley Summer Festival, which takes place in August.
The council has also agreed to give £1,000 to Ilkley Flower Show, and £1,000 to the Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts.
A further £300 will go to Ben Rhydding Community Fete and, for the first time, the council has agreed to give £500 to Ilkley and District Arts Federation for its annual arts festival.
The council increased its community events budget from £6,000 to £9,000 for this year.
The 55th annual flower show will take place at the Clarke Foley Centre, Cunliffe Road, on Sat-urday, August 9. The event usually forms part of the programme for the month-long summer festival.
Ilkley Parish Council is also contributing to the festival by organising the open-air Last Night of the Proms Concert, on The Grove, on Saturday, August 20. The council is underwriting the event to the cost of around £7,100.
Councillor Mike Gibbons said there was a queue outside Ilkley Library from early in the morning the day the tickets went on sale. The majority of tables for the concert had been sold this week.
The concert is expected to make an income of £8,000 if all the tickets are sold.
Ilkley and District Arts Federation holds the Ilkley Arts Festi-val each autumn.
