Wharfe fundraisers back meningitis walk
A COAST to coast walk to raise money for Meningitis UK has passed successfully through Otley and Ilkley.
The seven-day, 57-mile Walk of Roses - Walk for Meningitis (from Blackpool to Bridlington) stopped off at All Saints C of E Primary School, Ilkley, and at Barclays Bank, Otley to receive money from supporters.
In Otley, Meningitis UK's Chief Executive Steve Dayman banked all the cash raised by the trek so far, while Otley Chevin Rotary Club members were out collecting more for the cause.
In Ilkley, Mr Dayman received a cheque for £820, the proceeds of a ceilidh organised through All Saints Primary by Ilkley couple Karen and David Burnett, who lost their four- year-old nephew, Martin Duck, to meningococcal septicaemia in 1994.
Mr and Mrs Burnett also took part in the first four days of the walk.
Mr Dayman, who lost his son, Spencer, to the condition in 1982, said: "Meningitis is devastating and causes so much heartache and suffering. This event is so important in helping us to raise money to reach our goal of finding a vaccine."
Last year, Meningitis UK launched its Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign to help raise £7 million. To support the campaign call 0117 373 73 73 or visit meningitisuk.org.
