Challenge expected to Addingham Council leadership
NEXT Wednesday's meeting of Addingham Parish Council could see the emergence of a new leader for the first time in more than five years.
There is expected to be a challenge to Coun Gordon Campbell for the chairmanship of the village body.
Although parish councillors were remaining tight-lipped about events, the challenge is expected to come from members who were newly elected last year, with parish councillors Ian Taylor and Alison Widdup at the forefront.
Asked whether he would be a challenger, Coun Taylor declined to comment and attempts to contact Coun Widdup were unsuccessful.
Coun Campbell was also reticent on the matter. He said: "I have not as yet been approached by any members of the council with a succession plan, so if they are being considered by other members of the council I am unaware of them."
Recently, members of Addingham Parish Council have been split over various issues including the proposed Wharfedale Trail and the delay over the production of a Parish Plan for the village. Parish clerk Christine Knowles also resigned recently for private' reasons - a move described as a disaster' by Coun Campbell.

The resignation of Gordon Campbell is a disaster for the village. He has worked long and hard for the village and too many good people such as Christine Knowles and Barbara have felt intimidated by the aggressive tactics of the new Councillors and have simply quit. I hope somebody will be able to enlighten us with the real reason for Christine Knowles' sudden departure. No doubt the Wharfedale Trail will be appearing on the militant's action list which will further split a divided village. Instead of putting the world to rights with grandiose schemes why don't they just stick to the basics and look after Addingham and its villagers.
Gordon Campbell's powers of diplomacy , sheer hard graft and an innate ability to engage with people at all levels will be a sad loss to the people of Addingham. He will be a hard act to follow and I do not see anyone approaching his calibre within the new hierarchy. With all the controversy and ill will it will be a wonder if they are able to engage a new Secretary. If the progress in recruiting a Secretary matches the progress of The Village Plan it's going to be a long wait !

Another ill-informed comment from the sour grapes brigade. Some facts:
1. Campbell didn't quit or resign, he just did not seek re-election as Chair. He is still on the Council.
2.The Wharfedale Trail is dead in the water, and no-one on the Council is going to resurrect it. The vast majority of villagers were in favour of it anyway.
3. The Village Plan is well developed and on schedule, with input from many sources and will benefit the village for many years to come.
4. There are no "grandiose schemes" being planned, only bread and butter village issues. If you don't agree, name some.
Stop this ill-informed sniping and start practising what you preach - unity for the village and not a personality contest for the next Tory District Council seat.
