Dog owners warned about Burley-in-Wharfedale beck contamination
A warning has been issued to dog walkers using a popular Wharfe-dale field after reports that a beck running through it has been contaminated.
The warning came after a notice was placed on the Burley-in-Wharfedale Forum urging dog owners and children not to play in Woodhead Beck, which runs through Burley House Field.
The notice stated that a blue green substance had been found in the stream which runs from the moor down into the village.
It is not yet known what the substance was but it is believed that it could be some kind of chemical which has been dumped further up the moor.
Burley House Field, which is currently owned by Bradford Council, is a popular walking place for dogs in the village.
A spokesperson for the Environ-ment Agency said: "A pollution incident at Woodhead Beck has been reported to us and we will investigate and continue to monitor the problem."
A spokesperson for Burley Parish Council said: "We will report the matter straight away to Bradford Council. There have been incidents like this in the past and we will try to get it seen to straight away."
Just last year, dumped household chemicals were blamed for pollution which killed fish in another beck running through the village.
The Environment Agency was called in to investigate the deaths of fish in Carr Beck and confirmed that they had all been poisoned.
The alarm was raised last May after a monster 2lb trout disappeared and several other fish were found dead in the beck which had turned a murky grey colour.
It was thought at the time that the pollution could have been the result of chemicals being poured down a drain or running off agricultural land.
