Wharfe charity wins ban on funfair goldfish prizes

A WHARFEDALE charity has won the first round in a fight to stop goldfish being given away as funfair prizes.
West Yorkshire Animals in Need, based in Ilkley, has persuaded Bradford Council to ban goldfish and any live animals being offered as prizes in events on council land.
The decision affects any fairground stalls or sideshows on any council land in the district - including Ilkley Carnival, which invariably has a huge funfair on the May Day bank holiday.
Now the charity has set its sights on gaining a similar ban from Leeds City Council in a bid to end the suffering of creatures in transit to or at events.
A similar ban by Leeds would affect events on council owned land such as Yeadon Carnival and Horsforth Carnival.
The humble goldfish has long been a common sight dangling in plastic bags around fairground sideshows, and is often wrongly hailed as a pet which can thrive with little or no maintenance.
In fact, West Yorkshire Animals In Need chairman Dr Oliver Townsend says fish carried to and given away at fairs and other events often suffer.
The group began its campaign after seeing live fish being given away as prizes at an event on Bradford Council owned land in Keighley.
To give the issue an eye-catching impact when the ban was debatedbefore a Bradford Council committee, Dr Townsend enlisted the help of Nemo', a brightly colour toy based on the loveable fish character from the Disney film Finding Nemo.
But he says the issue of animal welfare is no laughing matter. The aim was to make councillors aware that animals should be treated with dignity and not given away like a toy.
Dr Townsend said: "These poor little creatures are transported to the event in bags. The battering they must get isn't all they have to suffer, they are exposed to sunlight and they are in chlorinated water which burns their skin.
"We should all be aware that animals should be treated with as much dignity and respect as possible, not treated as a toss-away soft toy."
The ban gained the unanimous support of councillors at Bradford Council's Environment and Waste Management Improvement Committee.
In future, Bradford Council will make it clear that stallholders cannot deal in live animals at events held on its land.
The council ban will not affect fairs on private land - although Dr Townsend is hopeful the group will win wider restrictions in future.
Dr Townsend says he has seen goldfish at a Yeadon Carnival stall in recent years, and the charity is planning to present a similar proposal to Leeds city councillors soon. He says the drive to outlaw goldfish being given away as fairground prizes could take the group much further afield too.

Are all members of this group aliens, and only been on this earth 2 weeks??? If not then how sad that they have never been to a fair before.

Marianne, its not very nice to call your fellow humans an idiot, is it now!?
We (as is anyone else) are allowed to express [bold]personal[/bold] opinions through this forum, without being hounded and verbally abused by you.
If you have a point to make in this forum then do so without making assumptions regarding peoples' intelligence or the ability to raise their children in the 'correct way'. Unless you know GLS personally, you are neither in a postion nor qualified to make such presumptions!!
Let me point out somthing rather obvious Marianne......an animal is an animal and [bold]not[/bold] and [bold]never will be[/bold] a human being.
Animals do not think, feel pain nor have the same emotions as humans and [bold]never will do[/bold] .
They are not human beings, they are animals. So stop trying to 'feel' for animals and project your emotions and thoughts into them. Quite rightly, GLS says we shouldn't anthropomorphise animals!
We (human beings) [bold]are and always will be[/bold] the dominant species on this planet, and as such will always be the top of the food chain. We (human beings) have been domesticating, keeping animals as companions, killing and eating the flesh of animals since primordial times.
Instead of spoiling the enjoyment of thousands of individuals, wouldn't it have been a far more appropriate action to champion policing the husbandry of the fish in the first place?!?
And rather than deny monetary income for the fairground owners, fish breeders and consequently the income of the pet shop owner, who no doubt would have sold these new goldfish owners appropriate equipment, food, water treatments and most importantly, given free, accurate advice on captive fish husbandry!?! And so have given the fish a much loved and cared for existance that you aspire to!!
Think, sometimes peoples' ill-thought actions have far more reaching consequences.......

How can you even suggest that animals don't think or feel pain,(what planet are you from ) I have worked with animals all my life and prefer them to most people. do you think organisations like WISPA, ANIMAL AID, INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE, are doing all the work they are,to try and save animals, because INTELLIGENT PEOPLE realise that animals are sentient beings with thoughts and feelings not dissimilar to our own.
I suggest you do a bit of reading to try and gain a bit more knowledge on the subject.
Do you know how many celebrities are now involved in animal rescue, such as Paul Mc cartney, joanne lumley, heather mills, the list is endless are you saying they all dont know what they are doing.
And your comment on the fish is not exactly true, most people you will find that win a fish at the fair ground will not have given it any thought and will take it home and place it in any old bowl that they can find and fill it with tap water.
Just because we have been killing animals for years does not make it right. And it never will do, but people like you just want to go on mis treating them and letting them suffer.

If your children etc are that fussed over a goldfish, cant you just go to Ilkley Pet Shop and buy one from the nice people there? and get it a nice little bowl with a filter and everything it needs to be happy and healthy so it lives longer instead of the poor fish from the fair thats been carted around in little bags and lasts about a week before it dies? At least that way its less traumatic from the children when they run down and the fish has gone belly up?
thats what i did, and its worked out alot better. Ive had the same fish for about 3 years now, and theyve had little baby fish now too! its great!

Just because they're "celebrities" it doesn't follow that they're experts on animals!

Think, sometimes peoples' ill-thought actions have far more reaching consequences.......[/quote] 1.) an animal is an animal and not and never will be a human being.
An interesting comment, however i think you will find even human beings are part of the animal kingdom.
2.) Animals do not think, feel pain nor have the same emotions as humans and never will do .
I fear your are incorrect in this assumption as i fear many others seem to be, A huge increase in scientific research on animal sentience is beginning to answer alot of the animal 'consciousness' issue( ‘Sentience’ is defined as the ability to have perceptions and sensations)The current scientific consensus is that all vertebrate animals, at least, are capable of feeling pain and experiencing distress. (For this reason anti-cruelty laws exist in many countries.including ours.)
3.) So stop trying to 'feel' for animals and project your emotions and thoughts into them.
As I hope you are beginning to realise they are capable of these 'feelings' and 'emotions of there own free will. People such as Marianne feel duty bound to protect these freedoms, please allow her to do so.

Yes we have been doing these things for many years, and as our understanding of the planet we live on, and share with the animals around us, becomes more advanced we are learning that maybe the way we deal with animals for food is barbaric, some countries have now taken the step to sedate animals before slaughter.
We will always 'kill' animals for food, but I think the way we do this is now becoming a moral issue, as is the way we treat animals (whether for food or not) I find it astonishing that an obvious attempt by Dr Townsend to improve the standard of life for any animal is met with such selfishness, is it really spoiling peoples fun to protect a defenceless animal from a short life of pain and misery, I hope not. Maybe a slight amount of education on the subject of animal welfare should be taught more freely in schools, as it seems apparent that we are plagued by naive and selfish adults throughout our community.
It is attitudes like this that we find so many species on our planet fighting for existence.
I am not saying that other animals are our intellectual equals, they never will be. But surely because of this we are the ones who are duty bound to help protect what them.
