MUSICAL Wednesday lunch breaks begin again on October 4 as Leeds International Concert Season, programmes another exciting season of lunchtime chamber recitals at The Venue, Leeds College of Music. Featuring some of the most talented young musicians at the start of their professional careers alongside students from the UK’s leading conservatoires and junior colleges the concerts are free for all.

This season’s opening concert is given by the exciting and versatile South African cellist Abel Selaocoe (October 4), a cellist who has explored music from across the globe and across all genres, from beat-boxing collaborations to classical concertos. For those that enjoy moving around or singing along to concerts, a relaxed performance on October 31features Slidin’ About, an award-winning trombone quartet sure to entertain with a mix of comedy arrangements and brilliant brass works. This season also sees the return of outstanding musicians from the Orchestra of Opera North with Arcturus chamber ensemble (November 28), and the Opera North String Quartet (February 20).

In January the Block4 recorder quartet presents a mixture of Contemporary and Baroque music. This season also sees two guitar concerts; a solo recital from Royal Northern College of Music student Owen Bunting (February 27) and from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Guitar Quartet (March 27). Solo piano recitals are always a firm favourite in the series, and this year the programme includes performances by Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula, Ariel Lanyi and Liga Korne.

Leeds Lunchtime Chamber Series offers the perfect midday respite with a chance to hear world-class performances for free. Leeds College of Music’s café bar stocks a range of drinks, sandwiches and light meals and is open before and after the concert. All welcome.
