ILKLEY Film Society’s final film of the current season is the bizarre French comedy Slack Bay on Sunday, June 3 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

In a fable of class conflict, cannibalism and levitation, set in the Pas-de-Calais region in 1910, two police detectives (clearly modelled on Laurel and Hardy) are investigating the disappearance of a number of tourists.

The disappearances may be connected with a family of mussel fishers who supplement their income by ferrying visitors across the bay (not always in a boat!).

Director Bruno Dumont was not associated with comedy until the success of his French TV mini-series P’tit Quinquin in 2014, but Slack Bay follows his usual practice of using some of the strangest non-professional actors ever to appear on screen, together with outrageously over-the-top performances from two of French cinema’s biggest stars, Juliette Binoche and Fabrice Luchini.

Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097.

Prospective new members for the next season should visit www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org and leave contact details if they wish to find out more information and become a member of the society.
