WINNER of three Oscars, Moonlight is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, May 13 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
A coming-of-age story set in present day Miami, the film shows three stages in the life of a young gay black man, Chiron, with a different actor for each stage. The film resists stereotypes and cliches of contemporary black American life, just as Chiron himself does.
Nominated for eight Academy Awards, Moonlight was the winner in the Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor categories, and this visually gorgeous film was described by Mark Kermode in The Observer as a “heartbreaking, uplifting, minor-key masterpiece.”
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. With just two further films before the end of the current season, prospective new members should visit www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org and leave contact details if they wish to receive an application form.
