THE Who’s Who of The Yorkshire County Cricket Club, compiled by Paul Dyson, with a foreword by Martyn Moxon has been published by Great Northern Books.

From Alfred Ackroyd to Yuvraj Singh, from Isaac Hodgson in 1863 to Kraigg Brathwaite in 2017, this volume features profiles of all those 670 men who have represented The Yorkshire CCC by playing for its first 11 in first-class cricket, limited-overs matches or Twenty20 games as well as the 59 who played for ‘Yorkshire’ prior to the official club’s formation.

Whether they played in an amazing total of 883 matches, as Wilfred Rhodes did, or whether they wore the county colours just once – and this, surprisingly, applies to 115 players – each and every one of them has their own place in the county’s history and the contents within.

The author spent his youth listening avidly to Test Match Special and doing very little else for five days at a time in school holidays and at weekends did not prepare him for relative failure as a player with Clayton in the Doncaster League and Pannal Ash in the Nidderdale League. What he did learn, however, certainly prepared him for the opportunity, which his day job gave him, to coach school teams to trophy-winning success. This included an U-14 team which won the Yorkshire Region of the Lord’s Taverners Trophy in 1995.

More a student of the game rather than a practitioner, Paul Dyson joined the ACSH in the early-1980s and this gave him the encouragement to begin writing about the game.

His first piece came in 1983 and there have been about 300 further articles in The Cricketer, Cricketing Yorkshire, Cricket Lore, The White Rose, Wisden Cricket Monthly and The Yorker. His seven previous books and booklets are listed elsewhere and include two volumes co-authored with Mick Pope. Biographies and autobiographies of a dozen players including Geoff Boycott, Brian Close, Colin Cowdrey, Darren Gough, Nasser Hussain and Jim Laker all have statistical sections by him. He currently writes a weekly column for the website of Yorkshire CCC – Memory Match in the summer months and Throwback Thursday in the close season.
