THE sensitive Japanese family drama After The Storm is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, April 8 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
Ryota, once an author but now a rather shabby private detective, is estranged from his wife who rarely receives child support because of his gambling addiction.
His father has died, and Ryota and his sister each believe the other is exploiting his mother.
When a typhoon forces him to take refuge in her house he finds he has the chance to rekindle his relationship with his family.
Director Hirokazu Koreeda’s films have become favourites with the film society’s members.
This will be the fifth of his films to be screened in Ilkley, following Afterlife, I Wish, Like Father Like Son and Our Little Sister, with Like Father Like Son being the most popular film of that season.
He frequently uses the same actors repeatedly, resulting in strong ensemble acting.
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097.
