THE inspiring true-life love story A United Kingdom opens the second half of Ilkley Film Society's season on Sunday, January 7 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).

In 1947 Seretse Khama, king of the Bamangwato people of what is now Botswana and studying to become a barrister, meets Ruth Williams, a clerk at Lloyds, at a London Missionary Society dance. When they announce their intention to marry they are faced not only with the shocked reactions of both their families, but with a British government fearful of a political reaction in South Africa and determined to stop them ever living together in Africa.

A sharp script and superb performances from David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike enable this film, by Amma Asante (director of Belle) to avoid the cosy blandness that mars so many British films about historical events. The cynical manoeuvres of Winston Churchill, who supported the couple while Labour was in power and then reversed his position after being re-elected as Prime Minister, are very well portrayed.

Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about the season visit www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
