AN AWARD winning documentary filmmaker will discuss his craft at Otley Courthouse next week.

Outdoors broadcaster Terry Abraham will talk about the path that led to him creating his acclaimed BBC series Life of a Mountain when he appears on Friday, December 1.

After being made redundant 5 years ago, the self-taught filmmaker committed himself to chasing his dream of promoting the British countryside.

His debut documentary, Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike, broke records for the BBC and has been watched by several million viewers.

Growing up in rural Nottinghamshire Mr Abraham spent much of his youth exploring Sherwood Forest and working alongside his grandfather in the countryside.

Often travelling to far-flung scenic landscapes, his grandfather proved to be a major influence in shaping his love and appreciation for the land.

It is only in recent years, however - due to a health scare - that he has pursued his passion for the landscape in what he accepts has been a virtually obsessive manner, often over-ruling all other interests.

Once again working alone and camping out on the fells, the director recently released his sequel Lakeland film, Life of a Mountain: Blencathra, which has proven to be an even bigger hit.

During his talk Mr Abraham will share stories, give an insight into how he goes about his work, and talk about his experiences producing his latest and biggest documentary so far - featuring legendary mountaineer Alan Hinkes OBE.

His Otley talk starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £8 or £6 in advance or £9 or £7 on the door. They can be booked by calling (01943) 467466, visiting otleycourthouse.org.uk or popping into the Courthouse, on Courthouse Street.
