A TIMBLE farmer is celebrating the publication of her first book.

Stephanie Shields' poetry and prose has already featured in a number of anthologies and magazines, with some works also broadcast on local radio.

The launch of her own short story collection, Swan Landings, however sets a new landmark in her literary career.

The book, published through her own The Sheep Shed Press, was unveiled at the Washburn Heritage Centre in Fewston last week when more than 50 people attended.

Stephanie has strong links to the centre due to her involvement with its Oral History Project - a series of interviews which recorded the reminiscences of the people of the valley.

Relating that work to her new book, she said: "Sometimes the real stories would begin just when I was packing the camera away!

"I particularly loved the interviews with people who had lived before, during and immediately after the war.

"There were some amazing women in the Washburn Valley. There still are.

"My story, Rudolph Valentino’s Tent, is my tribute to them.

"The stories in the book are set in many locations, not only the Washburn Valley. It’s a rich canvas with many and varied slices of different lives.

‘When it came to launching my book, there was only one choice - it had to be the Washburn Heritage Centre.

"So much has been put on there to encourage writers and readers alike and we have had some great courses and fine performances.

"It’s a very special place."

Swan Landings, which features a cover designed by Jacky Fleming, is a three-part collection whose parts - Swan Pairings, Cygnets on the Flow and Swan Landings - are based on three stages of life.

The book is available now. For more details visit sheepshedpress.com, where it can be ordered online, or the Washburn Heritage Centre where copies are available to buy.
