THE vibrant Beatles documentary Eight Days A Week: The Touring Years will be Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, November 12 (Ilkley Playhouse at 8pm).

For those of us who grew up in a world of black-and-white TV, our memories of the Beatles in the years 1963 to 1966 are mostly monochrome. One of the revelations of the film, which was made with the cooperation of surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and Beatle widiws Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, is the wealth of colour footage of the group on stage from as early as 1963.

With performances ranging in time from the Cavern in Liverpool to their final official concert in San Francisco, and taking in on the way John Lennon's “rattle your jewellery” quip at the Royal Command Performance and the astonishing Shea Stadium event (where the “wall of sound” came from audience not band!) the film serves both as a wonderful reminder of a musical phenomenon and, for younger viewers, irresistible evidence of what all the fuss was about.

The work of actor-turned-director Ron Howard, whose own film career was kick-started by the music-themed American Grafitti, this is the first of the Film Society's two annual special events, the next being a silent film show in February.

Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about the Film Society's current season visit www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
