THE true-life story Lion, set in India and Australia, will be Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, November 5 at Ilkley Playhouse at 8pm.

Each year 80,000 children go missing in India, and Lion tells the remarkable story of one of them. After a planned trip with his brother to seek work goes wrong, five-year-old Saroo finds himself trapped on a train and stranded in Calcutta, over a thousand miles from his home village whose name he is too young to remember. Rescued from a children's detention centre by an adoption agency, he starts a new life in Tasmania where he has to adapt both to an utterly different way of life and to the arrival of a second adoptee, the deeply disturbed Mantosh.

Though the prospects for his future are transformed he becomes increasingly obsessed by memories of his beloved mother and brother and his need to find them.

The debut film of director Garth Davis, Lion was nominated for six Oscars and its box office success was aided by the presence of A-list stars Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara in the cast.
