A DRAMATIC new twist on a famous figure of Greek mythology will be given at Otley Courthouse next month.

Proper Job Theatre Company will present Medusa, written by award-winning Leeds-born poet and writer Helen Mort, on Saturday, November 4.

The play represents Mort's first work for the stage and places the monster of legend - a female with a deadly stare and snakes for hair - in a contemporary setting.

It also, through movement and lyrical new writing, aims to reveal the softer side of Medusa who is shown as a young and innocent beauty sucked into a world of power where everything is commodified.

The drama focuses on Medusa's experiences after she falls, destroyed by the men around her and the jealousy of the goddess Athena, and rises again - now cursed and destined to turn any man who sees her into stone.

A Courthouse spokeswoman is promising an entrancing evening: "This is for anyone who is fascinated by Greek myths and wants to enjoy a play with live music, exploring how poetry and music can come together to enhance storytelling."

The show, suitable for those aged 16 and over, starts at 7.30pm and places cost £12 or £10.

Tickets can be booked by visiting otleycourthouse.org.uk, calling (01943)( 467466 or popping into the Courthouse, on Courthouse Street.
