THE President, a film by Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, March 19 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

After a revolt overthrows a brutal dictatorship in an unnamed Asian country, the deposed despot finds himself trapped with his young grandson after the rest of his family have fled the country. With an ever-increasing bounty on his head, he must try to reach the sea without being recognised by his former subjects and soldiers – a tough task after years of having his portrait displayed everywhere, and without being given away by the little boy who cannot understand why his life of luxury has vanished.

Director Makhmalbaf, a former revolutionary himself and head of a one-family film industry (his wife and two daughters are also film directors) has been unable to live and work in his own country for some years now, and The President was made in Georgia in the Georgian language. Despite winning three best-film awards at international festivals it has been little seen in the UK, and this is a rare chance to see an outstanding film.

Non-members are requested to reserve tickets (£4) by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about the Film Society’s current season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
