A STAGE adaptation of hit 1990s movie Brassed Off will be performed in Leeds next month.

The film, starring Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald and Ewan McGregor, proved a captivating mixture of lighthearted comedy and political commentary.

The story focuses on the troubles faced by a colliery brass band following the closure of their local pit, and is set against the backdrop of the declining British coal industry in the 1990s.

The theatrical version by Paul Allen, adapted from Mark Herman's screenplay, aims to reflect the movie's blend of northern humour and the desperation of the times.

Presented by Bite My Thumb, Foot of the Barrel, Gravitas Entertainment and Northern Spark, it will be shown at Carriageworks Theatre from Thursday, September 1 to Saturday, September 3.

Grimethorpe Colliery Band provided the soundtrack for the film, but for the play's local dates the musical duties will be performed by The City of Bradford Brass band.

Director Neil Knipe said: "This is an unbelievably important story.

“Plays like Brassed Off are now modern folk tales for the north.

"These stories need to be ever present, passed down from generation to generation so we never forget the plight and battle of the miners and the tragedy of the pit closures.

“Yes, this production has all the classic lines from the film and good old northern humour but, unlike a lot of productions, we’re making sure we highlight the deep desperation and sense of being trapped that these characters faced."

Tickets for the Leeds shows, which start at 7.30pm, cost £12 or £10 for concessions.
