LOVERS of period drama should head for Ilkley Film Society on Sunday, April 3 for the latest film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd at Ilkley Playhouse from 8pm.

The classic story of Bathsheba Everdene and her three suitors: sheep farmer Gabriel Oak, his wealthy but older neighbour William Boldwood, and the dashing Sergeant Troy has been brought to the screen this time by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg with Carey Mulligan as Bathsheba, and support from Michael Sheen and the remarkable Belgian actor Matthias Schoenarts, also seen recently in The Danish Girl.

John Schlesinger's 1967 version, with Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Peter Finch and Terence Stamp is a tough act to follow and will undoubtedly be familiar to most of Sunday's audience. The Film Society is expecting some lively conversation afterwards about the relative merits of the two films.

Non-members are requested to reserve tickets (£4) by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about the Film Society's current season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
