TWO very different solo performers are set to wow audiences at Otley Courthouse this month.

First up is Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer, an award-winning one-man show starring Aidan Dooley that tells the dramatic true story of one of Ireland’s unsung heroes.

Crean adventured alongside Captain Scott and Shackleton during the age of exploration and the race to reach the South Pole.

He was part of Scott’s fatal 1911-13 Terra Nova expedition, during which Crean walked 35 miles across the Ross Ice Shelf to save Edward Evans – a feat for which he received the Albert Medal for Lifesaving.

The Antarctic Explorer show, which starts at 7.30pm on Friday, March 6, won the Fringe First Award at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a New York International Fringe Award.

Tickets cost £8 or £6 in advance, or £9 or £7 on the door.

Irreverent humour and a fearless look at disability, meanwhile, forms the heart of Jackie Hagan’s People Have Too Many Legs production.

The show, winner of 2013 Flying Solo Contact Theatre and National Rural Touring Commission, comes to Otley on Friday, March 13.

In it, Jackie tells the story of what happened after she was told she might die and had her leg amputated.

Filled with humour, glitter and “a big false fake leg called George”, her tale turns out to be a hilarious and optimistic one about a “dog-eared family and falling in love in awkward situations”.

Written and performed by Hagan, who is one of the rising stars of Manchester’s spoken word scene, and directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair, the performance begins at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £8 or £5 in advance or £9 or £6 on the night To book tickets or find out more about any forthcoming events at the Courthouse visit otleycourthouse.org.uk or call (01943) 467466.
