Terrier-like efforts still fail to find the right dog for Upstagers

Ilkley Upstagers Producer Gill Jackson is desperately trying to find a dog, the right dog, to take the leading role of Bullseye in her company’s latest blockbusting production of Oliver! at the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford.

The group has had great difficulty in finding a bull terrier to take this important role – although they have been offered the services of a bull dog.

Gill said: “We have had no response so far for the right sort of dog although someone in Ilkley has very kindly offered us a lovely bull terrier.

“I am trying to contact other groups who have put on the show to see if the dog they have used is available. I don’t know if it puts people off thinking that they have to take the dog down to Bradford for each of our performances.

“I am just working hard now to try and sort this out. Tickets are selling really well and we have an amazing cast gathered for this production, it is a fabulous show.”

Gill should now, for her daughter, Rebecca Lewis, a former Upstager, is currently Dance Captain for all the youngsters taking part in the West End production of Oliver! at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane.

Upstagers will be at the Alhambra Theatre from Wednesday to Saturday, June 15-18. They are arranging coaches to the show from Ilkley for the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday performances and places can be booked by calling Susan Lister on 01943 607944 or by calling in at the Upstagers’ coffee morning between 10 am and noon on Saturday at The Barn opposite Ilkley railway station.

Tickets for Oliver! cost from £12 and are available from the Alhambra box office on 01274 432000.
