Ben Rhydding pupils design children's menu

Little chefs from Ben Rhydding Primary School showed off their culinary skills when they designed the children’s menu for the newly opened Wheatley Arms.

Staff at the pub, on Wheatley Road, Ben Rhydding, asked youngsters for their support by encouraging them to dream up an ideal menu for children and to design a cover.

Included on the menu is a Calamari Lime Mayonnaise starter as the youngsters – all from Year 5 – got together to ensure they incorporated healthy eating into the children’s meals.

Headteacher Carrie Lynott said: “The children were very excited to be involved in the project and after they designed the menu they were invited to lunch which they really enjoyed.

“The entire school were asked to design artwork for the menus and it is lovely to think that anyone who eats there will see their designs.

“I think because we are the local primary school, the Wheatley Arms has adopted us and they have promised that 25 pence from ever extra portion of chips purchased there will go towards the school which is wonderful.

“We are now designing a monitor to see how much we raise.

“On top of that, staff in the kitchens made a celebratory centenary cake to help us mark our celebrations last week so we are certain that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

The Wheatley Arms, formerly The Wheatley Hotel, opened last month – seven years after it closed.

The pub was closed by the then landlord, David Woolley, in June 2002, who claimed it had suffered a slump in trade after the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease crisis.
