125 years ago At a meeting of the local board, Dr Little said that Ilkley as a health resort, had an interest in the free use of the moor but said that commoners’ rights had been interfered with by agents of the landowner Mr Middelton, who had attempted to hinder Mr Armitage, of Highfield, from cutting bracken. No lord of the manor could draw an invisible line across the moor and say that the public could not cross it, said Dr Little.

Board of Guardians say poor are suffering hardships

125 years ago At a meeting of the Wharfedale Board of Guardians it was reported that the poor of Ilkley were suffering hardships as a result of not having a resident medical officer. Mr Pollock reported that the population of Ilkley had increased very considerably of late and that increase had brought some amount of poverty. Among the poor he had occasion to go, and recently he visited a house where there was absolutely nothing.

125 years ago The Ilkley Feast of 1883 has come and gone. It was ushered in with rain on Saturday afternoon and washed out with rain on Thursday. Sunday was beautifully fine and the last train out in the evening was crowded, showing that a number of friends from a distance had been spending the day with us.

Abstinence meeting called at Ilkley Assembly Rooms

125 years ago A meeting of persons interested in the total abstinence movement is to be held in the Assembly Rooms. Captain Hadaway, RA, will preside and the conference will be opened by a speech from Thomas Cave JP calling attention to the probable future development of the Blue Ribbon movement and of its bearings upon the trades of brewing, distilling and retailing of intoxicants.

Friendly societies meet in unfriendly conditions

125 years ago The annual demonstration of the various friendly societies in Addingham, locally known as the ‘club walk’ was held under very unfavourable circumstances, as the heavy downpour during the former part of the day was against an imposing show. The Shepherds, Foresters, and United Order of Oddfel-lows took part, being accompanied by the Baildon Temperance, Idle and Silsden brass bands.

Public servant receives gift from vicar

125 years ago A presentation of a solid silver tea service was made to public servant W B Dyson on his leaving Spennymoor for Addingham. Vicar John Gaskill made the presentation and said he hoped that Mr Dyson would spend the evenings of his days among his early associates at Addingham in comfort, happiness and peace.

Boy falls into swollen river at Ilkley

125 Years Ago A boy named King, between seven and eight years of age, who was getting sticks from the river a short distance above Ash Grove, Ilkley, overbalanced himself and fell in; and, the river being swollen, was in imminent danger of drowning. Some persons who saw the accident ran for William Dyson, who resides at 65 Ash Grove, and he at once hastened to the spot, plunged in and rescued the boy.

Too late to build changing rooms for Ilkley bathers

125 years ago At a meeting of the Ilkley Local Board, it was stated that the minutes of the finance committee contained a resolution disapproving of the erection of a dressing room for bathers on the Wharfe, and also of the providing of new seats. Mr Wilson said that the committee decided it was too late in the season to commence the work.

Parcel service is launched in Ilkley

125 years ago At the Ilkley Post Office, the influx of parcels under the new system was not so great as had been anticipated, but on Thursday and Friday, considerably more parcels arrived than had been calculated on; and, considering the population, the authorities think the trade will be quite up to the average of any town in the kingdom.
