125 years ago
The long continued spell of dry weather is beginning to tell most unfavourably in some parts of the country. At Ilkley, owing to our splendid water supply, we have not as yet felt any inconvenience. The water in the reservoirs, however, is perceptibly diminishing and the Local Board officials are keeping a keen lookout for leakages.
During a trial into a damages claim against Otley Football Club for damages and trespass at the Wheat Sheaf Hotel, in Ilkley, Judge W T S Daniel remarked that there was now no skill in the game of football. Players could kick how and who they liked. If they kicked a man to death, so much for the man. It was a game of sheer brutal force - a matter of who should kick and hit the hardest.
About 30 ladies and gentlemen of the Ilkley Congregational Improvement Society left Ilkley by train for Studley Royal via Ripon. This was the annual pleasure excursion of the society and a number of invited friends completed the party. A very enjoyable day was brought to an end with music and miscellaneous.

On Tuesday a Leeds man and his wife chose Ilkley for an outing, and as the father of the woman had left home early in the morning with no indication of where he intended to spend the day the two persuaded the mother to accompany them to Ilkley. As they prepared for the return trip the daughter saw silhouetted against a building a form she knew well. It was that of a man over 60, who was clasping the hand of a much younger woman and bidding her a most affectionate and loving Goodbye'. Some say she saw him kiss her, but be that as it may, the leave-taking was rudely interrupted by the daughter calling: "Father'.
Miss Pankhurst, Miss Adela Pankhurst, and other suffragettes have been recruiting at Ilkley, and on Monday they held a demonstration at the Tarn, which some thousands of people attended. The proceedings were very lively and with many interruptions, but the speakers managed to hold their ground and enlist the sympathy of most present.
Mr Griffith Brewer, whose balloon Lotus' won the international race from Hurlington on Saturday, formerly lived at Ilkley and made several ascents from the Ilkley Gasworks.

Should Ilkley Council build small houses the rental of which will work out at no more than 7s. a week? To this suggestion which was brought before the council meeting last month, the answer given through the Housing Committee at the meeting on Wednesday was in effect: "No, it should be left to the private builder." But a promise was made that should there be insufficient housing built, the council would look again at the issue.
For the fourth year in succession ramblers from a wide area of Yorkshire gathered at the Cow and Calf Rocks on Ilkley Moor on Sunday and heard a number of interesting speakers discuss subjects of special interest to the rambling movement. Something like 2,000 were assembled on the eastern slopes of the rocks. Speeches were amplified through loudspeakers - this time most successfully - and there was community singing led by Mr F Clare, of the Friendship Holiday Association, Ilkley.
The Australian Rugby League Footballers, who made Ilkley their headquarters during their visit to this country in 1929-30, are again visiting England this season and will once more stay at Ilkley, at Marlborough House. They will leave Sydney on July 4 and are due at Southampton on August 14.

Remarkable singing by the male voice choirs gave what Mr Maurice Jacobson described as an exhilarating finish' to the Wharfedale Music Festival on Saturday night. Three choirs were given honours certificates.
Two lightweight and two heavyweight contests comprise the first wrestling programme to be held in the King's Hall, Ilkley, on Monday evening. It is anticipated that the big attraction will be Max Crabtree, a former lifeguard on the beach at Blackpool. Since becoming a wrestler he has achieved a sensational run of victories. In the other contest, Jake Larsen, an Alaskan wrestler, wrestles with Dennis Winn, of Leeds.
Men born between April 1 and June 30 are due to register for National Service tomorrow. It is expected it will affect about 40 youths in the Wharfedale area.

The 140th birthday celebrations of Burley Parish Church continued on Sunday with an open-air service in the vicarage grounds. Each Sunday throughout June special events are taking place. Sunday's celebrations started with a Family Eucharist in a marquee in the grounds. Special permission for the service to take place was granted by the Bishop of Bradford, the Rt Rev Geoffrey Paul.
Local field sports enthusiasts will be interested in the enquiries which are being made about introducing a European hunting licence. In France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Greece, hunters have to pass the theory examination. In West Germany, Luxembourg and Denmark both theoretical and practical tests are required.
During opening week at Hillards superstore in Springs Lane, Ilkley, the store staff were presented with a cake to commemorate the opening. By common consent it was agreed to present this to Middleton Hospital.
