The Midland Railway Bill in which is incorporated the Skipton and Ilkley Railway, has passed the House of Lords Standing Orders. We trust that having passed the standing stage it will soon break out into a steady run.

The internment of Mr Lister Wall, last of Skipton Road, Ilkley, took place. The members of the Ilkley Rombald's Moor Friendly Society of Oddfellows met at the Rose and Crown Hotel, walking in procession to the residence of their departed brother, and carried his remains to the parish churchyard. Mr Wall, 39, was treasurer of the society.

A party of naturalists left Ilkley for a few days work in the upper reaches of the Wharfe. In the wood near the bridge at Ilkley about a dozen varieties of shells were taken, though the heat and drought were very unfavourable to this kind of work. In Nesfield Lane a holly was noticed still bearing its clusters of scarlet berries a strong proof of the mildness of the past winter.

The 24th of May, Queen Victoria's birthday, is now termed Empire Day, and although it was Sunday. Though Ilkley did not by any means suffer nearly so severely from the effects of the heavy rain on Sunday night as places even as near as Otley, large numbers of day visitors were caught by the storm and had most unpleasant experiences. Four people who entered one of the Bradford buses considerately declined to use the seats, for they were so drenched they felt they would spoil the furnishings for other users. "If they had been rolled in the river they could not have been wettter," was the description which the conductor gave of them.

Empire Day was marked in various ways at the different schools in Ilkley on Wednesday. At Ilkley Grammar School the boys assembled in the School Hall where a brief service opened with the hymn Jesus Shall Reign, and later the boys joined in the singing of the Empire Song by Perry Fletcher, Parry's Jerusalem and Elgar's Land of Hope and Glory.

Including the personnel of choirs and orchestras, more than 2,0000 competitors are taking part in the 27th Wharfedale Musical Festival, which opened at Ilkley on Thursday. In some directions it is a record festival, particularly in connection with choral entries in the open classes.
