Across the Years
Death of an old fashioned publican
Mr William Kendall, proprietor of the Rose and Crown Inn, Church Street, Ilkley, breathed his last. His health began to fail about 12 months ago, and gradually declined. The deceased, aged 60, a brusque but good hearted man, was a type of the old-fashioned host now fast becoming so rare. He was well known to a large class of travellers as he drove the bus between Ilkley, Arthington and Leeds until 1865.
According to the draft of a new Ilkley Grammar School Scheme approved by the Charity Commissioners and submitted to the Council of Education, the school is to be a day and boarding school, and accommodation is to be provided for not less than 100 scholars. The tuition fees are to be at the rate of not less than £5 nor more than £12 a year for any boy.
Mr Michael Mullen, of Bradford, gave a remarkable entertainment to a crowded house in the Lecture Hall, Riddings Road. The programme embraced characteristics peculiar to most of the leading nationalities of the world.

John Hodgson, of North Parade, Ilkley, a carter employed by R Holmes, coal dealer and carting agent, narrowly escaped a fatal accident on Wednesday. He was off work unwell, but at his master's request he proceeded to the stable off Nelson Road to give the horse its corn. It was a very restive animal and had often given trouble, but with Hodgson was always on the best of terms. On this occasion, however it showed violent tendencies and got him pinned against the wall of the manger, bruising his arm and side. A drayman employed at the Victorian Laundry going into the stable found him insensible under the horse's feet.
Patrons of the Pavilion have this week another splendid bill to please them. The Mavis Trio are vocalists and speciality dancers that anyone could find pleasure in hearing and seeing - and Miss Ethel Neilson introduces a very graceful skipping rope dance.
Monday morning saw Mr Lister Horner, the district council's head gardener, and other council employees at work planting trees in Brook Street, an operation of great interest to many residents. Mr John Beanlands, Mr W A Johnson, and Mr A H Atkinson, of the Crescent Hotel, planted trees opposite their premises.

AparT from the announcement that the Ilkley rates will remain at the same figure as last year, the most striking revelation of the Ilkley Council's budget night is that no provision has been made in the estimates next year for a municipal orchestra. No figures were given as to how much had been lost on the orchestra last year, but we do not agree that it necessarily follows that a municipal orchestra should be a profit making concern.
"The only way we can prevent war is producing confidence between nations and taking away the implements of war." This sentence was the keynote of the address delivered by Professor S Brodetsky of Leeds University before a largely attended meeting in the Riddings Road Lecture Hall, organised by the Ilkley Branch of the League of Nations.
Mr S D Stirk, of Addingham, a former captain of the Ilkley Grammar School who is now English Lektor at the University of Breslau (Germany) has been awarded a Doctorate (D Phil) by that university. Before leaving this country Mr Stirk created a good deal of interest in the Addingham district with a series of lectures on local history.

The recent fall of a portion of ceiling at Burley Church of England School caused Ilkley Education Committee to ask what arrangements existed for examining the ceilings in schools, especially when they had been in position some years. Councillor Fred Atkinson said some of the plaster which had fallen from the ceiling was about an inch thick and very heavy and it would have been extremely dangerous had there been any children in the hall at the time.
At a meeting of the local Labour Party leaders last night it was decided not to provide any opposition in the forthcoming County Council election. The retiring member, Mr Harry Victor Haddrill (Conservative) of Springs Terrace, will be returned unless there is an independent candidate, which is considered unlikely. It is some 12 years since Ilkley had a contest in a County Council election. Nominations have to be in for noon tomorrow.
Mr Frank Dixon Marshall, of Hebers Ghyll Drive, has been appointed High Sheriff of Yorkshire and will be sworn in in April. The appointment is for 12 months. Managing director of Wilkinson and Warburton Ltd, wholesale textile warehousemen, Leeds, and vice-chairman of David Dixon and Son Ltd, woollen manufacturers, Leeds, Mr Marshall was awarded the MBE in 1949. He is a past president of Ilkley Rugby Club.

Nearly 1,000 people have applied for jobs at the new Hillards superstore which is due to open at Ilkley in June. The Cleckheaton based company will be holding interviews at Otley job centre between March 28 and April 8 to get through all the applications. A spokesman for the job centre said: "There are basically vacancies in every department of the store." Hillards public relations officer Mr Bill Billett said he was not surprised at the response. "It is not abnormal for us to get as many applications as this when we open a new store, but it is a sad reflection of the times," he said.
A last desperate attempt to persuade Bradford Metropolitan Council to turn down controversial plans for 18 new flats at South Parade, Ilkley has proved unsuccessful. Members of the South Parade Neighbourhood Action Group (SNAG) wrote to Bradford's planners this week expressing concern about the validity of the application.
Two Georgian urns - valued at £400 - were taken from outside Madam's nightclub in Cunliffe Road, Ilkley, on Monday night.
