A waggoner in the employ of Mr Horsman, nurseryman, Ilkley, met with an accident. He was returning from Bradford, and when near Sunset View, at about eight o'clock at night, got down from the wagon. He caught his heel under the wheel and in consequence it went over him, breaking his left leg. He was removed to Leeds infirmary where it is reported he is progressing favourably, A series of revival services in connection with the Weslyan Church in Ilkley, have begun. Miss Brewster addressed a meeting in the schoolrooms on the question of 'What Shall I do with Jesus - who is called Christ'? Miss Brewster, who is a remarkably eloquent and effective speaker, delivered a powerful and stirring exhortation to her hearers on the memorable words of Pontius Pilate.

The annual festival of the Burley-in-Wharfedale Salem Band of Hope was held. A public tea was given and entertainment. After tea the evening was spent with various songs and games and altogether a very pleasant evening was spent.

This year's weddings have so far been all remarkably pretty as regards the dresses, which like court gowns, have been very soft and flowing. Brides still cling to the Princess idea with their wedding gown probably because there is something regal about it, suited to the heading of two processions, which it is a bride's fate to lead.

Mr William Arthur Lupton, of Red Gables, Ilkley, and of the firm Lupton and Fawcett solicitors, Leeds, was married at Sutherland Avenue Wesleyan Church, London, on Thursday, to Laura Mabel, youngest daughter of the late Mr John Denby, of Wycliffe House, Shipley. The marriage was a quiet affair and there were no bridesmaids. The honeymoon is being spent in the South of France.

The following letter was published in the Gazette: Sir, - I was surprised to read in another newspaper a disparaging statement about Ilkley. I think it disgraceful for any member of the Tradesman's Association to give utterance to such words as that poor benighted, end of creation place'. If this is the best that this association can do the sooner they disband the better it will be for the prosperity of Ilkley.

The water in Heber's Ghyll was a roaring torrent early this week, showing how quickly yet steadily the huge weight of snow on Ilkley Moors was carried away. Though the moorland streams made glorious pictures, the fears of serious flooding in Wharfedale were unrealised.

The application for a permanent extension of the licensing hours in the Otley Police Division, from 10pm to 10.30pm, came before the Otley Bench of Magistrates at the adjourned Brewster Sessions on Friday. The Rev W Brockbank opposed on behalf of the Ilkley Council of Christian Churches, who had passed a resolution on strongly urging the Justices to refuse the application. After a lengthy retirement the chairman announced that the magistrates had given careful consideration to the application and had decided to extend the hours from eight to eight and a half hours a day, and the latest permitted hour would be 10.30pm.

Many Ilkley people will remember personally Professor F J C Hearnshaw, of King's College, London, though it is 30 years since Ilkley was his home. Since that time he has achieved a worldwide reputation as a student of history and been Professor of History at King's College, London, since 1913. In his new book, Conservatism in England, he details the growth of English Conservatism from the time of Henry VIII to the present day.

For the second time in a fortnight the new clubhouse of the Ilkley Rugby Union Football Club was found on Tuesday afternoon to have been entered and contents stolen. Each raid followed very much the same pattern with the wire mesh removed, a window broken, and spirits, cigarettes and cash removed.

Two West Yorkshire double-decker buses which have been in service at Ilkley this week have recorded the number of passengers carried between certain points during the journey by means of an electric machine. At the end of each day these buses give an approximate figure of how many passengers travelled on them during the day. The machines, it is stated, make a reading every time a passenger sits on a seat.

With a bitterly cold wind blowing snow and sleet across the moor top, 57 motor cyclists set out on Saturday to complete three laps of a hazardous ten-mile circuit near Beamsley Beacon in the Ilkley Grand National Trial. Even though conditions were considered a little easier than last year, it was so cold that at times the brakes froze and riders' hands became so cold that they were unable to feel the controls. The weather in fact took a toll equal to that of machine trouble, and out of 57 starters, only 20 finished.

Pupils from Ilkley Grammar School have been helping Bradford Council plant young Scots pine on Ilkley Moor this week. The plant is a continuation of work done on the Moor for the last few years, during which damaged trees have been felled and replaced with young ones. About seven temporary enclosures have been set up in the existing plantation and the countryside officer this week defended their decision to erect the fence, which has brought complaints from local people in the past.

A new radio installation to improve poor VHF reception in the Ilkley area could be ready by the end of September. A spokesman for the BBC said the new transmitter would be in addition to the Wharf transmitter. A reception survey will be carried out shortly after the transmitter becomes operational.

Members of Ilkley Peace Action will be joining other demonstrators on Friday at three sites which they claim form "integral links in the nuclear chain." The groups will form a 14 mile human chain from Greenham, via Aldermaston to Burghfield, and will release balloons into the air to demonstrate their peaceful intent.
