Boys will be boys and girls will be girls and like the poor, we will always have them with us. Swinging on gates, pelting to death frogs and pilfering apples are looked upon as harmless amusements, compared with the grave offence of sliding on footpaths. The practice of sliding is a very dangerous one and the cause of a great many serious accidents, not to say loss of life, according to a communication which has reached us from an Ilkley lady.
King frost has held rigid rule throughout the week and the temperature has fallen to an exceptionally low point, 20 degrees of frost having been registered. To the remains of last week's storm there has been 'superadded' an occasional slight fall of snow.
An amateur dramatic performance in aid of the Lord Mayor's fund for the relief of widows and orphans of soldiers killed in the Egyptian War was held in the College Hall, Ilkley. Unfortunately the house was a small one, a state of things which never fails to cast a chill over the best of performances.

Indiscriminate almsgiving and overlapping of charitable efforts are two evils the Guild of Help, established some time ago amongst us, seeks in particular to prevent. Yet notwithstanding that the work of the Guild is now in active operation, it seems that the old system of giving when one pleases, and without proper investigation, just continues, with the result that those capable of pulling long faces and telling a plausible tale are getting help on every hand.
We are pleased to learn of the success which is being attained by Mrs Willie Keighley ( nee Green), as an elocutionist. Mrs Keighley is an Ilkley lady, residing in Morecambe, who has studied under Miss Amy Brooks, of London, with the result that she now has the command of a choice repertoire of recitations, dramatic, pathetic and humorous.
The council's decision to dispose of the museum building recalls to mind the interesting fact that it is 70 years since the old building came into existence as a Methodist Chapel. Since then it has been used as a Navy mission, Salvation Army meeting place and a museum.

There is every indication that Ilkley will enjoy a record Christmas so far as the number of visitors to the hydros and hotels is concerned. The popularity of spending the Christmas season in this manner is obviously increasing and very many of the Ilkley establishments have been booked up since the end of November. Ben Rhydding Golf Hotel said: "If we had as many rooms again we could fill them. We are absolutely full and are refusing about ten a day"
Dainty childish grace, extraordinary acrobatic agility and a revel of colour are the outstanding impressions left by the display of dancing given by pupils of Miss M Hurford in the Ilkley King's Hall. The display was the outcome of a generous offer by Miss Hurford and her pupils to assist the Ilkley Unemployment Fund.
A suggestion that Turner Lane, Addingham should be extended by the making of a new road crossing Heathness Beck was considered by the Parish Council. Mr T Brear said: "If they build houses at Heathness it would make Long Addingham longer." Mr J Watson said: "This would be as costly a job as the proposed new bypass road." It was finally decided that the parish council should oppose the suggestion.

MORE than 100 pigeons, some of them the finest to be found in the country, arrived at the Ilkley Railway Station on Tuesday, to be entered in the tenth annual Oriental Frill Pigeon Club Show held in the Riddings Hall, The Grove. There were 164 entries for the show, which was again organised by the club's secretary, Mr Geoff Bentley, of Ilkley, a world-famous pigeon fancier.
Plans have now been issued by the 370 (WR) Field Regiment, RA, TA, whose headquarters are in Bradford for the formation in Ilkley of a new Troop of Field Gunners. The troop will form part of the 'R' Battery, which is commanded by Major A F J Marshall, of Ilkley. During the past two weeks recruits have been coming in and the first ten of these were sworn in by the Adjutant for engagements of two to four years.
Preparations will be completed this weekend in Ilkley for the Christmas rush of outgoing and incoming parcels and letters which are expected next week. Additional sorting centres will be established in the town. To cope with the anticipated masses of parcels and letters, about 40 extra workers are to be employed, and the Post Office's own nine vehicles will be augmented by an additional two, hired for parcel deliveries.

An eight-year-old girl, a pupil of All Saints First School, Ilkley, has written her own Christmas Carol. Elizabeth Senior called her carol I like Christmas Time', and the four-verse song is to the tune of While Shepherds Watched'.
Last Sunday will always be a memorable for the two dozen women from Ilkley who went to Greenham Common for the demonstration against Cruise Missiles. There was no control of the 10,000 people apart from leaflets distributors asking them to remain non-violent in their protest. There were no police directing traffic, no loudspeakers, and few facilities of any kind.
The chairman of Ilkley Civic Society has said that more new development is needed in Ilkley to create jobs. Mr Graham May told the employment forum: "If we want to employ more people in Ilkley we are going to have to have buildings in which to employ them. I am speaking personally and not for the Civic Society. One of the things the society does is to oppose new development in Ilkley but these two things don't fit together."
