The family of the late Matthew Todd have just presented to Saint Margaret's Church, Ilkley, a beautiful stained glass window to the memory of that gentleman, who was a regular attender and a staunch supporter of the church. The subject of the window is the Good Samaritan.

The Ilkley Local Board received a letter from a butcher asking for temporary permission to kill in the Old Gas Yard. The chairman's opinion was that they had no authority to grant such a request. Mr Beanlands was of the opinion that they were bound to provide a slaughterhouse in case of need.

The Local Board discussed the remuneration and number of drills to be carried out by the new fire brigade. The meeting of the Ilkley Auxiliary of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals took place. Following a remark by Mr H R Yorke (Hon Sec) that animals were given for the primary purpose of hunting, and that no proud sportsman would be found guilty of any cruelty, a discussion took place about the cruelty of hunting, and otter hunting particularly. Mr Hutchinson thought otter hunting was the least cruel form of hunting. Why didn't people attack fox hunting. A voice: They dare not do it. That is a rich man's sport.

A temperance meeting took place in the Assembly Hall, Wells Road, on Tuesday. The Rev J A Sharpe in a most able address, said the legalised drink trade was in very great measure the parent of pauperism, lunacy and crime, and that the best way to keep outside the workhouse, asylum or prison was to keep outside the public house.

Mr James Armitage who for more than 60 years has had associations with Ilkley, on Wednesday sailed for Canada, where he has a son engaged in farming.

Mr John Richardson, who has been stationmaster at Ben Rhydding since May 6, 1898, terminates that appointment and at the same time retires from his service with the Railway Company at the end of this month. In the past 34 years, by his never-failing courtesy and tact and the efficient manner in which he has attended to his duties, Mr Richardson has won the warm appreciation of the very large number of passengers who have made use of the station A series of interesting proposals by which it was hoped to render some help to the unemployed of the Ilkley district came before a special meeting of the Ilkley Council of Social Welfare. The first point was in connection with the suggestions considered at the last meeting for making ar-rangements by which the unem-ployed could repair their own boots and those of their families.

The party season is just coming into full swing and more and more people leading busy lives are turning to wine and cheese parties as a good alternative to an elaborate buffet supper served with a lot of expensive 'short' drinks. Not only is the work and expense cut down, but cheese, after all the rich meats and fruits, makes a very acceptable change. Use large cans and wine boxes with taps and everyone can eas-ily replenish their glasses.

Concern at the deterioration of many areas of the River Wharfe was expressed by members of the Ilkley Angling Association at their annual meeting.
