Auction of Middleton Hall comes to halt at just £5,000

125 years ago

Mr Dacre offered for sale at the Middleton Hotel, Ilkley, the valu-able residence known as Wharfedale School and Eastmoor. There was a large atten-dance but no business was done. After ineffectual attmepts to obtain separate bids, the two lots were put up together and were eventually withdrawn when the bidding had reached £5,000.

The examination in Religious Knowledge at the Ilkley National School was held. The following entries have been made on the head teachers' certificates: "The children are thoughtful in their answers and show they have been thoroughly taught. It gives me great pleasure to examine this school the children are bright and ready with their answers."

An announcement of the Midland Railway's application in Parliament for new railways included the Skipton and Ilkley Railway. The line commences at a junction with the company's main line in Skipton and terminates at Ilkley by a junction with the Ilkley and Otley joint line of the Midland and North Eastern Railway.

100 years ago

The members of the All Blacks' team were entertained by a smoker at the Cresecent Hotel on Monday evening, when there was a large gathering of sportsmen of all kinds to welcome them. The King's health was drunk and also a cordial welcomes given to the team. After their health had been most heartily drunk the team acknowledged the compliment paid to them by giving the Maori War Cry.

One of the New Zealanders was down at the Slaughterhouse on Monday demonstrating his skill in sheep dressing. He is a butcher, and the method adopted in New Zealand makes it possible to kill and dress a sheep in two and a half minutes.

During the last few weeks a couple of cyclists have been ranging the West Riding and defrauding small shopkeepers by passing silvered farthings for sixpences. The modus operandi has been for one of the men to ride up to a shop asking for a packet of Woodbines', or some other small article, tender one of the faked farthings and then bolt with the fivepence change. The men came to Ilkley on Monday and the police throughout the area were put on alert. As a result they were captured at Guiseley.

75 years ago

Interruptions took place at the meeting organised by the Ben Rhydding Women's Unionist and Conservative Association in the Ben Rhydding Council School on Friday. But the interruptions did not come from the audience. It was what is known locally as Mischief Night" - the night before the Gunpowder Plot. Crackers were exploded at the entrance to the school. Later, the whole of the lights in the building went out. Lady Watson pluckily con-tinued to speak in the darkness.

It was with a full realisation of the solemnity of the occasion that Ilkley marked the 14th anniversary of the day which saw the signing of the Armistice and the sounding of the Cease Fire' across the great battlefront where war had raged for more tha four years. In Ilkley Poppy Day is always extremely well supported and the band of enthusiastic workers found a ready response from the people of the town.

Since the Rest Room was provided for the Ilkley Unemployed they have been able to organise themselves for united activities in various directions. One of these is a periodical class in physical jerks', being held at the Drill Hall. The men are keep-ing themselves thoroughly fit so that they will be ready for work whenever the opportunity comes

50 years ago

Addingham Parish Council is to ask the Postmaster to increase the size of the apertures in letter boxes in Moor Lane and Park Lane, Addingham. It was stated by members that this had been promised a year ago after difficulty had been experienced with the Christmas post. It was stated that 50 per cent of the Christmas cards would not go through the apertures in two of the letter boxes concerned.

The re-formation of Ilkley Youth Club in May, with the Drill Hall in Leeds Road as their new premises, appears to have been successful in bringing together Ilkley young people. Some 60 members were present on the opening night and the majority favourably impressed by their new quarters. At the moment girls are in the minority.

A former Burley amateur ac-tress is now stage manager for varius managements in the West End of London, and has been associated with some outstanding Edinburgh Festival productions. Miss Ruth Atkinson served her apprenticeship to the art of theatre with Burley Players Amateur Dramatic Society. Her first professional appointment was as assistant stage manager to the West Riding Theatre.

25 years ago

An enjoyable day was spent by a large gathering at Moorfield School, Ilkley, during a one-day conference of the churches workshop of psychical and spiritual studies. Mr Robert Findlay spoke of Help from the world unseen.' He began by saying the bible was full of paranormal stories and followed this by giving examples of how information and help had come to others and to himself for which no normal explanation of its source could be given.

Clothing worth £117.97 was stolen in a smash and grab raid on a shop in Grove Promenade, Ilkley. Stolen were a gent's bluethree-quarter length anorak, a pair of blue-green cord trousers, a gent's multi-coloured sweater and a red check shirt.

How many people passing Ilkley Parish church and seeing the tower will have known that Columbus was on his way to America when the tower was rebuilt? In a letter to the Parish the Vicar, the Rev R Cleland, has noted this and other historical events which have taken place since the early 7th Century when the church was first built.
