AS we briefly intimated last week, the Ilkley Primitive Methodists set themselves the task of raising, by the end of the financial year, £100 towards the reduction of the debt on their place of worship, and with a view to helping them in this matter, the honoured pastor of the Congregational Church, the Rev S D Hillman, generously offered to give a lecture and was a great success, financially and otherwise. The subject of the lecture was "Victories in the battle of Life".
A SHORT concert and entertainment was given in the National Schoolroom in Addingham on Saturday evening last. The programme was divided into two parts, the first comprising duet, songs and trio; and the second, a musical operette, entitled “Cox and Box.” The latter part was entirely performed by an amateur party from Ilkley, whose services were all gratuitous, and the proceeds were handed over to the churchwardens, in aid of a new organ fund.
THE first of a series of social evenings for the people was held at the Wesleyan Chapel, Ben Rhydding, on Friday evening week, when there was a large and appreciative audience present. The object of the promoters of these entertainments, as their title implies, is to provide recreation of an elevating character for the masses, and that at a cheap rate, admission being free, though a collection is made at the door to defray expenses.
ILKLEY Wesleyan Sunday School Convention was held in the Wesleyan Assembly Hall, Ilkley, and was attended by Sunday school officers, and teachers from all parts of the circuit. ALTHOUGH the sending of Valentine’s cards appears to be a custom of the past the day itself will be celebrated with a dance at the Lister Arms Hotel, and it is anticipated that up to 100 people could attend. Mr Wade will be master of ceremonies and Mrs Wade will play the piano, with Mr J H Dean on the violin. A feature of the gathering will be a post office at which valentines cards can be posted to anyone in the room.
MANY people in Ilkley were kept awake by the high winds which swept Wharfedale last night. To the accompaniment of rattling doors and the roaring of chimneys was the occasional bang of a dustbin lid as it was lifted by the force of the wind and sent cantering down a back street. It was estimated that in many parts the wind reached gale force – that is, over 60 miles an hour. Amongst the more serious items of the storm was the breaking of the shop of Mr J Fox, pork butcher, Leeds Road, and a certain amount of damage occasioned to stalls in the open air market in New Brook Street.
Several street lamps and chimney pots were also damaged.
THE Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, following the inquiry last September into the public rights of access on Rombalds Moor, has now issued an Order defining the rights. The order states that the land is a “manorial waste or common” which is situate within an urban district. Application has been duly made to the Minister by Mr Frederick Grotrian, of Branksome Dene Glen, Westbourne, Bournemouth, the person entitled to the soil of the land, to impose limitations on and conditions as to the exercise by members of the public of their rights of access to the land.
DR M R Dobson, Chairman of the Ilkley Urban District Council, officially opened on Saturday the premises which have been taken over in Ilkley by the Salvation Army, in the building in North Parade formerly known as the PSA Hall. Erected in 1902 when the movement of the PSA Brotherhood was at its height of popularity, the building has been closed for religious work for several years and latterly has been used by a local firm of motor engineers. The interior of the hall had been repainted and redecorated and a rostrum had been erected in readiness for the opening ceremony, and an expenditure of about £100 had been incurred.
A CASE brought against a youth, alleging that at Chelkar Reservoir on November 14 he wilfully killed two whooper swans, which are protected birds, was dismissed by Skipton Magistrates on Wednesday.
He had pleaded “not guilty”. The secretary of the East Lancashire Ornithological Society gave evidence that on that afternoon, he saw six whooper swans on the water and heard a shot from the direction of the far end of the reservoir. He saw a male person on the far side with a gun, and he was running in the direction away from the witness. Mr SS Gill, while strongly deprecating the killing of the swans, submitted that there was no evidence the defendant shot them.
OPPONENTS of the scheme to spend £10,000 on a new sports pavilion on the playing fields in Leeds Road for Ilkley Grammar and Secondary Schools had seconds thoughts about the matter at Tuesdays meeting of the County Education Committee, at Wakefield. Last week, the council refused to approve the expenditure and in the face of strong opposition from the Conservatives and their supporters, referred the question back for further consideration. On Tuesday, however, on the proposition of a Labour member, it was agreed that the scheme be put before the County Council again in March.

His wife was chairman of the Ilkley branch of the Arthritis and Rheumatism council.

Present Operatic Society President, Jennifer Terry, says: “There are lots of interesting things other than performing on stage. If anyone would like to give their support by helping to raise funds or perhaps helping behind the scenes they should contact us.”
