THE report that the Ilkley and Skipton Railway had been abandoned by the Midland Company was received in Ilkley on Thursday morning with no little consternation, but very few had faith in its correctness. Some people believe it to be a mere ruse on the part of the company to influence property owners.
ON Saturday evening, Mr Arthur Taylor, of Ilkley, gave a most interesting and instructive lecture at the Wesleyan Schoolroom in Addingham on water. He exhibited several diagrams, showing the various peculiarities in the boiling, freezing, and distilling of water, and extracted the gas from a quantity of water and exploded it, which later was greatly appreciated by the listeners.
ON Sunday morning a fire occurred in some outbuildings connected with Netherwood. One of the firemen had a narrow escape. A ladder had been placed against one of the windows and the fireman had ascended it for the purpose of putting some water on to the flames, when the centre mullion, which had been loosened by the heat, fell with a terrible crash on the spot where another man had stood but a moment before. The fire is supposed to have originated in the saddle and harness room, where some rugs had been placed before the fire to dry. The damages are estimated at about £200.
MR R A Moffat, postmaster at Ilkley, has been promoted to the postmastership of Spalding, Lincolnshire. Spalding is the centre of a large postal district, and the position much more important and lucrative than the one Mr Moffat has held at Ilkley.
WHARFEDALE was visited on Sunday by the biggest flood experienced for 20 years. Through heavy rain last week the river was running almost bank full, and on Friday several pastures and roads were under water. With more rain on Saturday, particularly up the valley, Sunday's great flood was the outcome. The finest sight was to be witnessed long before ordinary people were astir, as the flood was at its height before daybreak.
THE great Children’s Concert in the Town Hall, on Monday and Tuesday next, will be one of the finest children's concerts given in Ilkley. About 150 children from Ilkley and Ben Rhydding are taking part under the conductorship of the Rev W E Bradley.
THE last link in the important schemes inaugurated by the Ilkley Urban District Council some years ago to ensure that the water supply to consumers in Ilkley is adequately filtered will be completed by what is known as the Old Reservoir and Hill-Top Filtration Scheme. The scheme includes the provision in the existing building known as the Old Reservoir – on the edge of the moors almost opposite the front of Wells House Hotel – of a complete filtration plant that will serve two functions. It will filter under pressure the water used in what are known as the Hill-Top East and West Circuits, and will also filter a quantity of water which will go into the Old Reservoir and be used as a balancing tank. The Old Reservoir was the first of the Ilkley reservoirs and was constructed in 1851 by the old Ilkley Waterworks Company, when Ilkley’s population was 811 and has a storage capacity of 160,000 gallons.
A LEEDS secretary was summoned to Otley Police Court for leaving a motor car without setting the brake in Ilkley, and also for not having a driving licence. PC Allen said on Sunday, December 9 he found an unattended car had run down Wells Walk and crashed into the entrance of the Methodist Chapel. He spoke to the defendant, who was in a nearby hotel, and she said she thought she had set the brake before leaving the car. Witness said the hand brake was partly on but the car could be pushed along. The defendant’s licence had expired 79 days previously. A fine of 10shillings was imposed for leaving the car without setting the brake, and for not having a driving licence she was fined 7s. 6d.
STRONG comments on the steadily increasing rates in Addingham was made at the meeting of the Parish Council on Monday. Mr J Watson called attention to several complaints he had received concerning excessive rates which ratepayers in the village were now being called upon to meet. For the last half-year, he said, including water charges, they worked out at 14s. 8d. in the pound for the year. Addingham’s rates were getting on to the same level as those of a town and where it was going to finish he did not know. Mr T Dean said: “We are higher than Ilkley.”
A BIGGER Ilkley Secondary School could mean a better General Certificate of Education course and an earlier start on the second phase of the final stage of the extension, it was stated at the quarterly meeting of the School Governors. It led to the Governors resolving to inform the County Council they were thinking on these lines and strongly to recommend a reconsideration of the size of the school.
EXTENSIVE modernisation of Menston Hospital, at a cost of over one million pounds, is foreshadowed in a report by officers of the Leeds Regional Hospital Board and the Menston Hospital Management Committee, presented to a meeting of the Mental health Committee of the Board. The report urges that the proposed modernisation should be implemented at the earliest opportunity in two stages. It suggested that the first stage should encompass a nurse training school to cost £20,000; a treatment unit to cost £15,000; wards at £80,000 and the conversion of wards 1, 2 and 7 at a costs of £60,000.
WHEN Skipton Rural Road Safety Committee on Wednesday received a report that the County Council supported the representations which had been made for an early start on the Addingham by-pass road: that the Minister of Transport had written to the effect that the need to construct the by-pass as soon as possible was recognised; that it would be borne in mind for inclusion in a programme as soon as funds would permit, it was agreed to discuss the matter again when information was forthcoming as to when the Ministry’s present five-year programme expires.
THE Ilkley and District Motor Club held its annual meeting at Yeadon Aero Club, and members were told of the special events arranged for the club’s 75th anniversary. 1985 is the 75th anniversary of the Club’s foundation, and a special committee has been working to produce a brochure and other promotional items, as well as a full programme of special events to mark this milestone in the club's history.
