Petition in favour of Sunday closing

1884

A meeting of the Ilkley School Board in the Town’s Offices, Brook Street, was asked to sign a petition in favour of Sunday closing to prevent the sale of intoxicating liquors. The chairman said this was not an issue which the board was elected to discuss but he thought all would sympathise with the petition.

As most of our readers are perhaps aware, the Grove Hydropathic Establishment has been thoroughly overhauled and re-modelled, and will in future by carried on under the title of the Spa Hydropathic Establishment. It had been at first the intention of the proprietors to mark the opening by a little ceremony of a semi-public character, but eventually this idea was abandoned, and it is now ready for the reception of visitors.

A meeting of the Church of England Temperance Society was held in the National Schools when there was but a very meagre attendance. Rev A C Downer spoke strongly in favour of the total abstinence section, as the only safe one and advised his hearers to give up the use of intoxicants altogether.

If a public institution ever justified its existence by work and results, it is the Ilkley Coronation Cottage Hospital, which during the three years of its existence has provided treatment for 200 patients, many of whom have not only been restored to health and strength but snatched from the jaws of death. Previous to its existence local surgical cases and serious cases of accident had to be sent to either Leeds or Bradford Infirmary for treatment, and the railway journey in numerous instances proved more than patients were equal to.

The annual meeting of Ilkley Swimming Club was held last Friday evening. Mr J W Dixon, treasurer, said there was a deficit of £17 19s 6d on the last six years working. Last season had been the worst in the history of the club, the total bath takings only amount to £20, as against £40 in previous years. Mr Atkinson expressed the opinion that the baths were of vast importance to the town and that the season tickets of 5s per head were generous and within the reach of everybody.

A specially constructed motor waggon with oxygen container conveying yearling and fry trout for stocking the Middleton Angling Club's waters and that of the Ilkley and District Angling Association arrived recently with 3,000 yearlings and 4,000 fry for the former club, and one thousand yearlings for the latter. These were safely transferred to the respective preserves after having been acclimatised by frequent changes of water until the temperature of their container approximated that of the their future home, the crystal Wharfe, for fish, like us humans, can catch a cold.

Mr Fletcher, at the first meeting of the committee of the Ilkley Preservation League, explained that their object was for the good of Ilkley. “We have not formed this league in active opposition to the Ilkley Urban District Council,” he said. “It has been said by one or two people we are trying to govern Ilkley, we are not. We are associated here to try and preserve the beauties of the town and we want to act in conjunction with the council. The council would be well advised to take no notice of us if we begin to interfere in their province, but I am sure they will welcome our co-operation if it is wise and if it is done in a proper manner.”

Whatever may be the financial outcome of this year’s Musical Festival – and the committee makes no secret of the fact that unless financial returns improve or subscriptions increase there may be no more festivals - music lovers in Wharfedale are assured this year, at any rate, of an exceptionally interesting three days of music. The programme which opened in the Ilkley King’s Hall yesterday most emphatically justifies the earnest hopes of the promoters that this event, which has done so much to make Ilkley famous, will be maintained in te years to come in all its fullness. Actually over 2,000 people will have appeared on the platform before the close of the festival.

The Grand National was described as “A yearly orgy of cruelty” by the Chairman, Mr AB Swaine, at the annual meeting of Craven and Upper Wharfedale Branch of the RSPCA held at Ilkley on Saturday afternoon. In his comments, he said: “There will be General Election coming along very soon and as soon as you get to know the names of the candidates, write to them and ask them if they will do their best to stop this yearly slaughter of horses, and irrespective of party, vote for the man who says he will.”

A target of £600 set by the parents of scholars at Ilkley Grammar School to provide furnishings and additional equipment for the school was reached at a bazaar held at the school on Saturday and opened by Col, Sir Malcolm Stoddart-Scott, MP for Ripon.

A suggestion by the County Planning Officer that if the gravel pits are transferred to the Council when extraction of gravel is completed, the council will accept responsibility for filling above standing water level and the restoration of the arena, has been approved in principle. The planning officer had in mind that if the pits were filled to above standing water level with inert material the Council might be prepared to become responsible for filling them.

A cottage and cottage/coach house in the grounds of Arden Lea Marie Curie home at Ilkley raised a total of £56,000 when they were sold at auction by Harper Watson of Ilkley. The two properties, in the south-west corner of the grounds of the Marie Curie Memorial Foundation home, both in need of repair and modernisation were surplus to requirements. The money raised is to be used towards a substantial programme of improvements and additions to the facilities at Arden Lea.

On Monday about 70 members of the Ilkley Players gathered at the Play House to audition for parts as extras in the film Private Function now being filmed in Ilkley. Later about 30 of them were asked to report to the Troutbeck Hotel for costume fittings.
