THE incessant fall of snow, hail and rain which set in towards the end of last week increased in volume, swelling the river Wharfe and its tributaries to such an unwonted degree that the natural channels were quite inadequate to carry away the flood; consequently the waters burst their natural boundaries and rushed in an irresistible torrent over the valley doing great damage to property and in several instances placing the lives of people in imminent jeopardy. |

A number of sympathetic friends collected at the railway station to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Todd and family who were leaving Ilkley for their new home in Australia. A substantial sum was collected for the purpose of enabling the Todds to emigrate and this was supplemented by gifts of clothing. Mr Todd carried on the business of plumber and painter in Ilkley for a number of years but the decline of the building trade compelled him to seek his fortune elsewhere. |
Pinder over charges local man over impounding of his cattle 9:44am Thu 10 Jan 08 125 years ago
At a meeting of the Ilkley Local Board a letter from Mr T Grunwell was read out stating that he had been overcharged by the 'pinder' for the impounding of some of his cattle and demanding the repayment of the overcharge. After a little discussion is was agreed to refund the amount. |
Case dismissed against Ilkley men for taking fish illegally 9:33am Thu 3 Jan 08 125 years ago
AT Skipton Petty Sessions two men from Ilkley were charged with unlawfully taking fish in Captain Beck. It appears that the two men were taking fish for scientific purposes and had obtained permission but had unwittingly trespassed in a field belonging to the Reverend T W Nowell, of Luton and London. After hearing evidence on both sides the chairman dismissed the summons. |

A frightful disaster involving great loss of life occurred at Bradford. While the hands employed in several mills were getting their breakfast the huge chimney stack belonging to Newlands Mills in Bowling fell with a loud crash, wrecking the surrounding property. Attempts were made to extricate the killed and wounded and the scene was a horrible one with large numbers of mill hands lying crushed and bleeding in the wreckage. About 30 persons perished. |
Ex-surveyor set fire to waterworks records 11:10am Thu 20 Dec 07 125 years ago
The former surveyor, inspector of nuisance and manager of the waterworks of the Burley-in-Wharfedale Local Board appeared before the Otley Petty Sessions accused of setting fire to the records and papers of the board. The accused, who had been given notice to leave for ne-glecting his duties due to intemperance, said he had been drinking and could not remember the day in question. He was sentenced to two months hard labour. |

Boys will be boys and girls will be girls and like the poor, we will always have them with us. Swinging on gates, pelting to death frogs and pilfering apples are looked upon as harmless amusements, compared with the grave offence of sliding on footpaths. The practice of sliding is a very dangerous one and the cause of a great many serious accidents, not to say loss of life, according to a communication which has reached us from an Ilkley lady. |

The old-established commercial and family hotel in Ilkley, the Wheat Sheaf, having undergone thorough repairs is now complete with hot and cold baths, large dining room fitted with electric bells and heated with hot water pipes. It has good stabling and fishing tickets are available. |

The family of the late Matthew Todd have just presented to Saint Margaret's Church, Ilkley, a beautiful stained glass window to the memory of that gentleman, who was a regular attender and a staunch supporter of the church. The subject of the window is the Good Samaritan. |

Defaulting ratepayers beware!. Mr Jonathan Hainsworth, clerk to the Ilkley Local Board, applied for 164 summonses against defaulting ratepayers, to be returned on December 8. And now each householder eyes his neighbour askance, and wonders whether he or she in on the 'black list'. |
