Defaulting ratepayers beware!. Mr Jonathan Hainsworth, clerk to the Ilkley Local Board, applied for 164 summonses against defaulting ratepayers, to be returned on December 8. And now each householder eyes his neighbour askance, and wonders whether he or she in on the 'black list'. |
Auction of Middleton Hall comes to halt at just £5,000 1:28pm Thu 15 Nov 07 125 years ago
Mr Dacre offered for sale at the Middleton Hotel, Ilkley, the valu-able residence known as Wharfedale School and Eastmoor. There was a large atten-dance but no business was done. After ineffectual attmepts to obtain separate bids, the two lots were put up together and were eventually withdrawn when the bidding had reached £5,000. |

The festival of Guy Fawkes was celebrated at Ilkley. The principal scene of action was at the National School where, through the liberality of several of the school managers and friends, there were great stirrings in the shape of a huge bonfire and pyrotechnic display. |

Seen from the Cow rock of the Hanging Stone Ridge on Rombald's Moor a comet presented a most beautiful appearance. Its tail subtended an angle of quite 30 degrees. A simple way to find its present position is to draw an imaginary line from the Pole Star through the two 'pointers' of Ursa Major; this line passes through the tail. |

The Ilkley Overseers received information that a rat catcher, a native of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, was lying dangerously ill and in great pain in a stable at Low Hall, Ilkley, having visited the town in pursuit of his vocation. Despite the attentions of a doctor and an injection of morphis he succumbed to a disorder of the bladder. |

A special meeting of the Ilkley Local Board was held for the purpose of taking into consideration an application to the Board of Trade for a licence to use the electric light for lighting all streets and roads, for public and private buildings, or for other purposes in this district, and if need be to appoint a committee. |

ON the arrival of a train at Skipton, it was discovered that a valuable horse, the property of Mr W Fawcett, of Addingham, which he had purchased at Brough Hill, and put on at Kirkby Stephen, was strangled in the horse box. The accident was not discovered until the box was opened at Skipton. |
'Raging fire' was exercise test for fire brigade 5:07pm Thu 4 Oct 07 125 years ago
A rumour was widely spread that a fire was raging at a residence near the nursery gardens. Numbers of people made for the scene of the supposed conflagration and on arriving found that the scare had been arranged to try the efficiency of the fire brigade. Alarm was given in the usual form to the sexton, who set the bell ringing in the tower of the parish church. |

Ginnet's Circus visited Ilkley and gave two performances in a field near Brook Street. The attendance was large at each performance, especially in the evening, when the spacious marquee was filled. Some very clever feats of horsemanship were shown and the performance of a part of acrobats was greatly admired. |

A number of ladies connected with the London Missionary Society's Zenana Mission held a meeting in the Congregational Sunday School Buildings, Riddings Road, Ilkley. A meeting was held in the adjoining church when after singing and prayer addresses having special references to the mission work in India were given. |
