ILKLEY seems to have a better class of yob - as police discovered when they investigated the case of a broken shop window.

When they searched Peter Dyer's electrical shop on Cowpasture Road for a possible missile they found not a brick but a bottle of champagne.

The incident happened on Sunday evening and police are now looking for the culprit.

Manager Brenda Littlewood was called to the store around 9pm after the alarm was triggered.

She told the Ilkley Gazette: "I came down to the shop and found that the window was smashed. At first I thought something must have been stolen but once I got inside I found a bottle of champagne on the floor.

"I couldn't believe it. This could only happen in Ilkley!

"We had to secure the building as quickly as possible. Now we have got to replace the window. I can't say how much it will cost but it won't be cheap because of the style of window it is.

"What a waste of a good drink!"

Ilkley Inspector Sue Sanderson confirmed that the window was broken, although she said she couldn't say 100 per cent that the champagne bottle was the cause.

She said: "What we can confirm is that the window was broken and there was a bottle of champagne found inside the store.

"We interviewed passers by but no one saw anything, and there is no CCTV in that area.

"If anyone saw anything we would advise them to give us a call on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Neither the police nor the store were unable to confirm which brand of champagne was used but even the cheapest bottle rarely sells for less than £12 while the most expensive can cost up to £100.
