A MAJOR milestone has been reached in Ilkley Rugby Club's bid for a £1.9 million new grandstand and clubhouse.

To coincide with an award from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in recognition of the fund-raising events organised by the club, chairman Richard Scargill announced that the total received or pledged had now topped £500,000.

The RFU award has singled out Ilkley RFC as the Club of the Year 2008 for Fundraising'. Some of the events, particularly those organised by the Junior and Youth section have been dazzlingly innovative, said Mr Scargill.

He added that recent indications from many groups in the area had revealed a real and genuine demand for facilities such as those proposed.

"Not only will they offer fully segregated mixed changing facilities, they will provide a club room designed for all sorts of activities," he said.

"These facilities are complemented by a large free car park. Any groups in need of such facilities are asked to contact the club now to register their interest.

"The mixed changing areas will be a timely boost for the rugby club in that they now have a girls' rugby squad of almost 30 players up and running, as well the promise of a viable ladies team forming over the Spring and Summer period."

Mr Scargill said that the £500,000 was more than 60 per cent of the club's target for internal fund-raising, but that other funding sources need to be secured before any development could go ahead.

He said he was confident that these funding sources would fall into place as the fund administrators appreciated the massive benefits that would accrue to the area and the community.

"The support given to the project by Ilkley Parish Council indicates how much local leaders feel such a facility is required by the area and demonstrates a need in itself," said Mr Scargill.

The next major fundraising event will be the Sportsman's Dinner and auction to be held at the Craiglands Hotel on May 22. Ex England World Cup winning rugby captain Martin Johnson will head an all-star guest list.

The event is already a sell-out, with all £60 per head places fully subscribed and much of the event being generously sponsored.

"If we can achieve something like this, then why should we not achieve our vision?"said Mr Scargill.
