After waking on Easter Sunday at 6am to the sight of snow Peter Rawnsley, who for 13 years has brilliantly organised the Guiseley Gallop on behalf of Skyrac AC, thought his problems were over when, just a few hours before the gun, he managed to reorganise the race into a two-lap event based on Springs Wood, Esholt.

Unfortunately some spectators thought it would be fun to sabotage the race by moving route signs and also orally directing some of the front runners off-course.

This meant that a group of a dozen runners who had been chasing Ian Fisher (Otley AC) for the generous race prizes were denied their chance and finished 20 places down the field having run further than anyone else.

Fisher's winning time of 32.01 was therefore nearly five minutes ahead of the second runner which was somewhat flattering but fortunately the ladies race was not affected with Catherine Farrow (Valley Striders) winning in 39.57.

The course change caused some confusion, meaning that the chasing pack of about ten runners, including Otley's Zack Whitehead and second claim member Jamie Noon, took a detour which lost them five minutes.

Other Otley members benefited from this misfortune with Liam Dunne finishing in fourth place (37.31) and Hugh Pearson finishing seventeenth (and third MV45) in 38.51.

Otley's Chris Stacey had an excellent run to finish 26th (39.40) followed soon after by Howard Jeffrey 50th (41.19), Carl Walsh 70th (43.00), Helen Walsh 164th (48.17) and Billy Rayner 311th (57.03).

There were 410 finishers from an entry list of 548 so the snow had clearly persuaded some entrants to stay in bed.

The race is always held on Easter Sunday, which has not fallen so early since 1913, and snow is of course more likely in March than, say, on April 25 which is the latest date on which Easter Sunday can fall.

However, as Peter noted, Easter will not fall so early again until the year 2228 by which time race headaches will have passed to the shoulders of others.
