Boshell brace leaves Guiseley in good Nick
Histon 1 Guiseley 4 Guiseley romped to a resounding victory on the opening day of the Blue Square Bet North Division but they had to come from a goal down to do it.
Former Park Avenue player Nicky Boshell, second from right, scored twice in Guiseley's win
The Lions had early chances but it was a brace from Nicky Boshell, one either side of the break, that turned the game in the visitors’ favour.
The Bradford-born player, who joined Guiseley from neighbouring Park Avenue in the close season, was denied a hat-trick after seeing a third goal disallowed.
The Lions pushed right from the start but Wayne Brooksby was denied by a save from the home keeper before Gavin Rothery shot over the target. Boshell headed wide from an Andy McWilliams cross before McWilliams put a later effort wide and then Brooksby had a shot blocked.
Histon rallied by opening the scoring with a rare effort, Dan Holman scoring in the 40th minute, but Guiseley restored parity a minute later.
Having chipped the home keeper to bring the Lions level, Boshell fired his side into the lead when Josh Wilson set him up four minutes after the break.
When Boshell netted in the 67th minute, the referee called play back for a foul on the home keeper and Gavin Rothery also had a later strike ruled out following an offside flag.
The decisions may have frustrated the visitors but they did not save the home side from further punishment. Two goals in the last three minutes ensured it was the handsome win the Lions’ display had merited.
Danny Forrest fired in a left-foot shot before Rothery, who had been thwarted several times, got his name on the scoresheet with a right-footed finish.
It was a good return for Guiseley, who now look forward to their first home game against Droylsden on Tuesday night.
